2011 Grand Marshal Andrew Stafford

Born on November 9^th 1962 to Andrew and Anastasia Stafford Quitchery, Wellington Bridge, Co. Wexford, Andrew Gerard Stafford is the third youngest of nine siblings. He was educated at Ballymitty National School and Ramsgrange Community School. Leaving school at 15 years old, Andrew went to work for a local hotel, as a trainee barman, where he continued to work for three years.   In the early eighties, Andrew joined his two younger brothers at Letts Mussel Factory in Wexford town, where the three worked until the factory incurred substantial layoffs in the mid- eighties.  Being one of thousands of what was known as “the brain drain of Ireland’s 80s,” Andrew decided to emigrate.

On April 24^th 1988, Andrew along with his then girlfriend Pauline Moran, set foot for the first time, on American soil, at JFK Airport.  With the help and generosity of their schoolmate and friend, they settled in Oyster Bay. Andrew started work in the landscaping field and 22 years later, he continues to do so, starting his own lawn care business in 2010. He is a parishioner of St. Domnic and has been involved with his church through the years, volunteering at such events as the St. Rocco’s Festival and Carnival.

Anyone who knows Andrew will tell you he is a sports fanatic. His interest in sports started at a very young age when he fondly remembers been allowed to stay up  with his dad, into the wee hours of the morning,  to listen on the transistor radio, to the World Heavy Weight Boxing Championships, broadcast from around the world.  Through his school years, Andrew participated in all the local sports and at the age of nineteen he joined his local handball club, at its inception in 1982. Handball quickly became his favorite sport and he soon started competing in novice grade tournaments at local and county level.  He had conquered the 60×30 County novices Doubles, County Team of Four and moved up a grade to capture the County Junior singles titles, prior to immigrating to the United States.  While back in Ireland in 1990, he started training again and before moving back to the U.S. he had captured the 60×30 County Intermediate doubles title.  Andrew was also very involved with his local club at committee level, carrying the offices of Treasurer and PRO respectively. He also spent a number of years as club trainer for the local boys and girls.

Andrew was a member of the St. Patrick’s Blood Drive Committee for many years. He is currently a member of the Matinecock Rod& Gun Club.

Andrew joined Mike Moran Division 8 of The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Glen Cove in 1996. He made his Major Degree in 1997 and through the years with division 8, he held the offices of Marshal, Vice President on three different occasions and President. He chaired several events over the years, most notably the Division’s Christmas party, Fox Navigation trip to the Irish Hunger Memorial in Manhattan and the division’s annual boat trip to the Statue of Liberty.  He also served as Treasurer of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee and was the chairman from 2001 to 2010. At present he holds the office of Charities and Missions within the division.

Andrew currently lives in Locust Valley with his wife Pauline and daughters Aisling and Caoimhe.

2011 Aide to the Grand Marshal James Burke

James Burke was born and raised in Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY, and attended Our Lady Help of Christians School, Power Memorial Academy, and Iona College. In the early 1960s, he served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and also worked as an account executive for Noranpac for 20 years.

In 1986, Jim joined the Michael Hogan Division 15 of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Massapequa, NY and has served as President of the Division, Nassau County Board President, New York State District Director, New York State Organizer and New York State Treasurer, and currently serves as New York State Secretary. He was named “Hibernian of the Year” in 1987 and served as Co-Chair of the Nassau County Feis for six years. He is currently Chairman for Pipe Band competition.

Jim is also a member of the Tara Pipes and Drums in Massapequa for over 20 years, currently serving as the Drum Major. He also has been a delegate to the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade for over twenty years and was Nassau County Aide to the NYC Grand Marshal in 2000.

Outside of the AOH, Jim is an Honorary Life Member of Knights of Columbus and Past Commandant of Marine Corps League. He is a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Massapequa with his wife Patricia (nee McNally). He has four grown children, and nine grandchildren.

2011 Aide To The Grand Marshal Carol McTigue

Carol was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the eldest of three children born to Anna and Perry Brink.  Active in her parish of Our Lady Help of Christians, she was a member of the CCD Journalism and Drama Clubs.  While in high school Carol met her future husband Ted Mc Tigue and soon after graduation, they were married.  The following adventureous years were busy raising their six sons in Lynbrook as well as being foster parents for the Angel Guardian Home.  Having all the boys, Carol became active with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Den Mother for a number of years and also as a Merit Badge Counselor.  She received many commendations from the Boy Scouts among them the “Silver Beaver Award” and the “St. George Award” from the Bishop’s Committee on Scouting.

After her years of Scouting and still with her CCD participation, Carol began working at the J.C. Penney Company.  She left Penney’s to begin a new career in Banking at Jamaica Savings Bank in Lynbrook.

Retirement came after twenty one years at the Bank with her title of Student Loan Officer.  Still active at her parish of Our Lady of Peace, Carol is a Eurachistic Minister and is a member of the RCIA Team for a number of years.

A proud member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Carol has been active for approximately 20 years, and has held office for her Division 14, Her County of Nassau, and her State of New York.  At present, she is the LAOH New York State Secretary, The Nassau County Feis Secretary, and Vice President of her Division 14.  Her Division has honored Carol with the “Woman of the Year” and Nassau County has also honored her with the “Woman of the Year”.  Marching in the many St. Patrick’s Day Parades, the Celebrations of the Feast of St. Brigid as well as the Annual Nassau County Feis,  have certainly been the highlights of  her Hibernian years.

Carol and Ted will be celebrating 53 years of marriage this September along with their family of 6 Sons, two Granddaughters, and one Great Granddaughter.

Glen Cove St. Patrick’s Day Parade Presents Sashes To Grand Marshal and Aides To Open St. Patrick’s Day Season

(Glen Cove, NY – February, 27, 2011) – The Glen Cove St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee held its annual Sash Ceremony at Page One Restaurant today in Glen Cove.

Sashes were presented to Grand Marshal Andy Stafford, and Aides Jim Burke and Carol McTigue by Parade Chairman Robert Lynch.

“I am so proud to stand here today with these two great people,” said Stafford of his two Aides Burke and McTigue after he received his sash. “I have known both of them for so long and they are great people.”

The Sash Ceremony is the unofficial opening of the St. Patrick’s Day season in Glen Cove. On Saturday March 5 at 8 p.m., the St. Dymphna Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians will be hosting its annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall in Glen Cove.

Then on March 13 at 11:30 a.m. The Parade Committee, along with Division 8 of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Division 8 of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians will hold its annual St. Patrick’s Day Mass at St. Patrick’s Church.

And finally the parade which will be held on Sunday, March 20^th at 1 p.m. through the streets of Glen Cove.

• The Glen Cove St. Patrick’s Day Parade forms behind the Finley Middle School, Forest Avenue.
• The Parade moves from the designated formation areas around the Finley Middle School and into Forest Avenue south of Dosoris Lane.
• It then follows Brewster Street  to School Street.
• From there it moves into Glen Street
• It then  follows Glen Street to the end of Parade Route at St. Patrick’s Church, which is located at the corner of Glen Street and Pearsall Avenue.
